Have I mentioned I grew up in Massachusetts? Well I did, and you KNOW I love this little town we live in now, but sometimes the ache for water is still an actual physical pain. When you grow up surrounded by lakes and the ocean, it stays with you for life. And here in central Ohio, the water situation is not great. There are a handful of smallish muddy lakes and ponds, but nothing really close to us. My in-laws live a few hours north, right near Lake Erie, and we always visit the water when we're there, but we're not there often enough.
All this to say, during late summer, after the patriotic holidays have passed and the American flag décor is put away, I gravitate toward a coastal theme through the house. I pull out maps and lanterns, driftwood and some strands of nautical looking rope. There's even a wayward starfish to be found here and there. It looks like summer and makes me happy!
I love this kind of décor so much, that if we actually lived near water, I'd probably keep it up year round. I'd have oars on walls, and paintings of sailboats taking up permanent residence. But I don't think that would work here, so I settle for late summer and enjoy the heck out of it while it's front and center!
